Tips for saving water during dry spells and throughout the year
Water is a precious resource. It's important for all of us to save water throughout the year - but especially during dry spells.
      In the Bathroom:
  • Over 3/4 of the water used indoors is used in the bathroom - your conservation efforts here can make a big difference!
  • Take shorter showers.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Repair leaking faucets and toilets.
  • Install low-flow aerators and showerheads.
  • Don't use the toilet as a trash can! Avoid unnecessary flushes.

  • In the Laundry:
  • Run washing machines only when full.
  • Allow heavily soiled clothing to soak in the washing machine to avoid multiple washes.

  • In the Kitchen:
  • Install a faucet aerator.
  • Refrigerate a bottle of drinking water rather than running the water until it is cold enough to drink.
  • Use a dishpan or fill up the sink for washing and rinsing dishes.
  • Throw food waste into the trash, not the sink's garbage disposal.

  • Super Saver Tips!
  • Outdoor and Seasonal Water Conservation and Waste Prevention
  • Winterize outdoor spigots to avoid pipes freezing and bursting.
  • Do not water your grass and plants during the day - do it in the evening when it is cooler. This will give water the chance to soak into the soil instead of evaporating and will also keep foliage (that is in direct sunlight) from 'burning' or becoming discolored.
  • Check outdoor sprinkler systems to be sure that there are no leaks between the source and the intended area(s) to be saturated.

  • Water Conservation: Things You Should Know
  • A Leaking water fixture can waste 200 gallons each day.
  • Low-Flow Showerheads use 40% to 50% less water than conventional fixtures.
  • You can discover silent, costly water leaks in a toilet by using a toilet tank dye tablet.
  • You can install a Low-Flow toilet in your home and save 20% to 50% of water used over conventional method toilets.
  • In-sink garbage disposals use a great deal of water and add unnecessary solid waste to sewer or septic systems.
  • Short shower times save 5 to 7 gallons - PER MINUTE! and uses 1/3 less water than filling the bathtub.
  • If you fill the bathtub only halfway, you've saved 10 to 15 gallons of water.
